when it comes to traditional family holidays, the string of resorts running all the way down the seaboard of somerset has everything you need. weston-super-mare is the biggest, and also one of the oldest. these elegant resorts grew out of tiny fishing villages two hundred years ago, when the fashion in holidays and health cures changed from ‘taking the waters’ at inland spa towns like bath, to sea bathing – and even sea-water drinking! ‘weston-super-mare’ sounds very grand, but it’s just medieval latin for ‘weston-on-sea’, and that’s the most important thing about it. the wonderful sweep of weston bay, with views over to wales and down to exmoor , is a never ending source of satisfaction. miles of broad, flat sandy beach are perfect for your youngest kids, but also for all sorts of activities. it’s a vast community open space that most towns just don’t have. the sea goes out and comes in a long way – the second highest tidal rise in the world – and that’s why weston-super-mare has its piers. originally they were deep water steamboat jetties, but then it was found that people just liked to walk out to sea on them, take tea and visit the amusements. we recommend weston’s grand pier , newly rebuilt after a big fire, and a day out all in itself. there’s a lot going on in the sea, but it’s not always easy to spot it. at weston’s seaquarium you can find out all about marine life in one handy exhibition without even getting your feet wet. there’s also a summer’s worth of cafes, pubs and restaurants which you can sit outside and watch the world go by. if that hasn’t worn you out, the nightlife’s pretty energetic, and there are any number of events and exhibitions throughout the summer. easy to get to, either for a day or a decade, with a town centre railway station and good m5 connections at j21. in other words, there’s no excuse not to visit!
